Information Because of recent Denial of Service attacks on the TMC's Services itself, additional security measures have been applied therefore you may experience issues trying to access the TMC. Please kindly understand.

Lookup single hostname or address

You can search for a single hostname (alias) or ip-address by entering the search query in the lookup box, and then click lookup.

About the lookup

TMC's database contain informations of all assigned IP networks including locations for most address ranges. However, these addresse neither must be correct nor guarantee the exact location. Typically, local ISP's do aggregate aside urban spaces, making geofencing via address not only unreliable but indeed sometimes very inexact especially for rural areas.

What are the difference between of the main lookup categories?

The Address/Host lookup type is selected automatically corresponding to the address you entered. search query varies by the target address/host. You can either search a domain name (a.k.a. Host name) that has a Domain-Name-System (DNS) record stored at a name server, or directly input the target IP-addresss (4/6). DNS Records usually point to a IPv4 Address (A-Record) or a IPv6-Address (AAAA-Record). You are also able to input a IP-Address range in CIDR-Format.

Domain Name records, aside from pointing to a single host can point to multiple hosts, and store additional data.
IP-Addresses directly point to a single computer, whose address can only be used once on the internt.
IP-Address ranges point to a whole network, like the network of your ISP.

What is a Regional Internet Registry (RIR)?

Regional registries divide the global IP-Address blocks to a wider regional area. Currently there are 5 major registries

What does bogon mean?

Bogon means, that a specific IP-Address must not be used on the internet. These addresses are usually used inside your local networks, like the LAN-Address of yor Cable modem or router, your Computers or Printers.

What are legacy networks?

Legacy networks are large IP4-Blocks that have been assigned at a time the internet was far from common, because of the high cost associated by the time and absence of RIR's, these ranges are owned by institutions and organizations in global scale (US Department of Defense, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Ford Motor Corp.. etc)

What does private address range mean?

Address space in IP-Addresses is partitioned by a IP-Address prefix and a bit range suffix to form the so called CIDR-Notation (Classless Inter-Domain Routing). Class-typed ranging (A,B,C) is not used anymore, as it is far too unflexible for todays use cases.

What is a reverse hostname (PTR-Record)?

Reverse hostnames provide the Domain name for a IP-Address, these are used to identify IP-Addresses to specific hostnames. this is i.e. used exensively to mitigate Spoof-mailing by authenticating domain names against the sending MTA.

What are autonomous systems?

Autonomous systems (short AS) are the systems that make up the entire internet. These systems consist of routers that maintain independent links to other AS'es. They are idenfied by the ASN (AS-Number), a 32 Bit Integer Number (formerly 16 bit). Today, more than 100.000 AS exist.

Is my computer or device connected to IPv6?

Despite it's availability on almost any device except for some older printers, ip-cameras or other embedded hardware, IPv6 internet connections are still not availble to any internet user, and also not available for some servers. To see if your current network is connected to the IPv6 world, check the "My Address" options on the top right.

Where is my ip location?

Your devices IP-Location is neither binding nor accurate, this is because servers use one or multiple data sources to determine your geographic location. These datasets differ in regards of reliability, accuracy and age of the datasets. Technically, there is no public way to find the current and exact location of a internet user just by it's IP-Address. Only providers and law enforcement have access to these sensitive data. Also, you are not safe by tunneling your Connection through VPN's or using multiple Cascaded VPN's (onioning) like the TOR Network.

How many ip-addresses does my provider have?

You can easily discover the many public networks of your internet provider, company or workplace by slecting your current IP-Address from the top right and then click on your providers name. You will find a listing of your Providers networks, including links to other addresses, networks and associated ASN's

Is my VPN working correctly?

When using a VPN you are just creating a "Internet Tunnel" to one of the remote locations of your VPN Provider. This enables your device to present itself to servers using a IP-Address of a specific country or region, mostly used for anonymization or to bypass geofencing, paywalls and more. To see if your VPN is redirecting your traffic to the desired location, simply check using the My current address tool
